Fees.

The typical litigation is a considerable investment of time and money and it is important that client discusses the question of fees with lawyer during initial consultation.  The terms of the representation are normally set in a written agreement setting the terms of retainer.  The retainer routinely discusses the matter the client retains lawyer to handle, the scope of required services, the manner of calculating lawyer's fees and expenses.

The typical fee payment arrangements are:

1. fees based on the lawyer's hourly rate;

2. flat fees based on the compensation for specific procedural step;

3. contingency fee arrangement based on percentage of recovered damages (usually used in personal injury, insurance or product liability litigation);

4. adjustable fees based on variety of factors.

The fees of a licensed lawyer can be based on variety of factors, such as lawyer's experience, character and reputation within profession, complexity of litigation, estimate of time to be reasonably spent, amount of the claim.  Typical hourly rate of a litigation lawyer currently varies from $200 to $500 per hour.

At this time, Sergiy Timokhov accepts retainers based on hourly rate of $245 per hour and flat fee arrangements for particular litigation steps (for instance, preparation of a statement of defence, preparation and attendance of one (1) day Small Claims Court trial).

There are many ways, the clients can reduce costs and those ways should be initially discussed with your lawyer.  For example, preparation of organized package of documents for your lawyer with a concise written summary of facts with reference to the attached documents can significantly reduce your legal bill. Similarly, prompt communication with and immediate instructions to your lawyer will significantly reduce amount of time the lawyer invests into client's case.  Please follow the link to find other ways to assist lawyer.
